The Central Research Institute of Machine Building Technology (TSNIITMASH) has developed a unique technology for hardening parts of machines and mechanisms for industry. It allows to preserve key properties of stainless steel, said Vladislav Ovchinsky, the Head of the Department of Investment and Industrial Policy of Moscow.
He noted that the Research Institute holds leading positions in Russia in the market of heavy, nuclear and power engineering. Along with this, the enterprise's developments have global recognition as well.
"Today the specialists of the scientific center have created an innovative technology for hardening the surfaces of parts of industrial machines and mechanisms. The new technique makes it possible to preserve important properties of stainless steels and prolongs their service life," said the head of the department.
The technology can be used to create more reliable parts for mining and processing equipment, food, chemical, oil and gas, and nuclear industries, where stainless steels with low wear resistance are particularly widely used.
Corrosion resistance is not reduced when wear resistance characteristics are improved, said Sergei Tsikh, chief researcher at the institute.
"The process involves saturation of the steels' surface with boron at a certain temperature, which allows the final fabricated elements to be hardened. Tests of the new development are carried out including in underground gas storages," he added.
