Money from excise taxes for sugar-containing beverages will be spent on the treatment of diabetic patients

The Russian government should direct the funds from the taxation of beverages containing sugar to the treatment of people with diabetes mellitus. This was stated by the Minister of Health of Russia Mikhail Murashko.

"Thank you for supporting innovations related to taxation of sugary drinks. The funds will go just for (treatment) of diabetes mellitus. The program has now been submitted to the government, and we are waiting for its finalization," Interfax quotes the official.

The agency reminds that the law will come into force not from January 1, as originally planned, but from July 1, 2023. The excise tax on sugary drinks will be 7 rubles per liter. The law will affect soft drinks with added sugar, glucose, fructose, sucrose, dextrose, maltose, lactose, syrup with sugar, honey. At the same time, the excise tax will not be levied on drinks that were manufactured and packaged by companies and sole proprietors providing services in the field of catering.
