The Russian government has decided to extend the tax free pilot project until the end of next year. The resolution is published on the Internet portal of legal information.

We are talking about compensation for VAT to foreign citizens when exporting goods outside the EAEU (Eurasian Economic Union – approx. editorial offices).

Earlier, the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation made a proposal to extend the experiment with VAT compensation for foreign tourists. The department noted that foreign individuals actively use the opportunity to refund tax free, and this has a positive effect on the development of the domestic tourism business and trading companies.

"The implementation of the tax free project in full will have a positive impact on the dynamics of trade turnover, primarily of expensive goods, increasing the share of tourist spending on purchases," the department noted.

Russia began testing a system that allows foreigners to refund VAT on purchases made on the territory of the Russian Federation from April 10, 2018. To return the money, foreign citizens must provide the tax free operator at the airport with a passport, a receipt for the purchase of the goods and the goods themselves.
